Invercargill has a great history of poultry and pigeon shows with the Southland Fanciers Club first exhibiting in 1886. At that time all birds, cats, dogs, guinea pigs, rabbits and even hedgehogs were catered for. The Invercargill Poultry and Pigeon Club’s first show was held in 1912 with 403 entries.
Over the years many characters have been in the Club. In the early days the very staunch Strang Brothers of coffee and spice fame exhibited poultry and pigeons. After the Second World War the five Calvert Brothers dominated showing in the south for four decades.
Centennial and National Show
The Invercargill Poultry and Pigeon Club hosted their Centennial and the National Show at the ILT Velodrome in July 2011and this was the first time the National Show had been held in Invercargill.
The show had 1700 entries spread over the nine sections of birds exhibited ranging from
Water Fowl, Pigeons, Poultry, Cage Birds and exhibitors came from throughout New Zealand.
Today the Club is enjoying strong membership growth with good support at the monthly meetings held on the third Thursday of each month. We have our own club rooms at 7 Lower Mary Street in Invercargill and we use these in the colder months. In the warmer months we visit member’s properties to look at birds before the monthly meeting.
This year our annual show is held on the second weekend of July. 2020 show will be the 11th& 12th July and it is held in the Kennington Kennel Club Hall in Kennington, just 3kms out of Invercargill.
The Club has South Island Championships competed for every year as well as Rosettes, Cups & Trophies and Prizes.
Show schedules are available from the show secretary each year.
The show is open to the public on Saturdays 1pm to 5pm and Sundays 9.30am to 1.30pm.
Door entry prices :- Family $10, Adult $5, Child $2.
